A day at the beach or the lake is peak dog summer. A little bit of the right gear makes it safer, drier and a lot less stressful — fewer scrambles for water, fewer soggy car seats, and a dog who’s tired in the good way. Everything below is a category we stock, grouped by what each piece is genuinely best at.

1. A life jacket — best for boats and beginner swimmers

If your day involves a boat, a paddleboard, open water, or a dog who’s still learning, a life jacket is the first thing to pack. A good one keeps a tired dog afloat and head-up, and the handle on top lets you lift them out of the water in one motion. Our RC Dog Tidal Life Vest is bright, reflective and built by a Canadian brand — fit it snug and let your dog wear it on land first.

2. Floating and fetch toys — best for shallow-water play

A floating toy keeps the fun in the shallows where you can see it, and gives a nervous swimmer a reason to build confidence a few steps at a time. Look for something that floats high and is easy to spot on the water. The Nerf Dog Tire Flyer is made for the lake, beach and pool; the KONG Safestix is a safer float-and-fetch alternative to lake sticks; and Chuckit! Erratic Balls give an unpredictable bounce on the sand. Skip real sticks — they splinter and cause mouth injuries.

3. Travel hydration — best for keeping them off the lake water

This is the piece most people forget, and it matters more than it sounds. A dog who has cool, fresh water on hand won’t be tempted to drink the lake — which is exactly what you want when blue-green algae is around. A fold-flat silicone bowl lives in any beach bag, and the Messy Mutts Silicone Collapsible Bowl is our go-to.

4. Cooling gear — best for the walk there and back

Swimming cools a dog down; the sandy walk to and from the water heats them right back up. A soaked cooling bandana or vest uses evaporation to take the edge off between swims and on the trek back to the car. We stock the RC Dog Zephyr Cooling Bandana and the fuller-coverage Zephyr Cooling Vest — re-wet them every 30–60 minutes to keep them working.

5. After-swim cleanup — best for the drive home

A quick-dry towel does double duty: it dries the coat and, just as importantly, dries the ears, which is your best defence against summer ear infections in floppy-eared dogs. For a mid-trip rinse of sand, salt or lake funk, a gentle soothing shampoo like TropiClean Aloe & Coconut Shampoo restores moisture without stripping the coat.

6. Shade and hot-sand protection — best for midday

Sand and packed beach can get hot enough to hurt paw pads, and there’s often little natural shade at the water’s edge. A pop-up shade or umbrella gives your dog somewhere to cool down between swims, and a quick five-second hand test on the sand tells you whether it’s too hot for bare paws. When you can, plan beach trips for the morning or late afternoon, when the ground is cooler and the sun is kinder.

Staff picks for 2026

Building a beach kit from scratch? Our team would start here:

  • The non-negotiable: fresh water and a collapsible bowl, every single time.
  • Best safety buy: a well-fitted life jacket for any boat or open-water day.
  • Most fun per dollar: a bright floating toy for shallow-water confidence.
  • Best comfort add-on: a cooling bandana for the hot walk back.

The bottom line

You don’t need everything on this list. A life jacket when there’s a boat, fresh water always, a floating toy and a towel will carry most dogs through a great beach or lake day. Pack it the night before, and keep your dog out of any water that looks scummy or discoloured.
